When is the Peach Festival going to be held? The Peach Festival is always held on the last weekend of July. That is, the last full weekend. Saturday and Sunday must fall in July. The Wildlife Festival has been held the same weekend for the last few years and will probably continue to do so. These events are always held on the last weekend in July. Try it out on your own calendar and you be able to answer the question for yourself. Why are there ads on the pages now? It's getting more and more time consuming and expensive to maintain this site. Computer software helps to save time and a good server to host the site helps too. But software and servers cost money and the volunteer who maintains this site needs to find a way to help himself with the cost of maintenance. The Ruritan Club helped greatly and The Peach Basket sent some help but we need to find a way to make the site self sufficient. The ads will produce a few pennies if people click them. Literally, a few pennies. Even that little bit per month is the best we can hope for. This is still a non-profit page. If anyone thinks otherwise, we'd love to see the stashed money and pay a few server bills so fell free to point it out. Why aren't there any real estate listings? We don't want to discourage people from visiting. However, we don't want to encourage any development of the island. Progress happens on its own and even without our help, the builders and developers are going to cover as much of Knotts Island with houses as they can. If there are any hard feelings after the dust settles, we don't want anyone to blame us. Since there are a lot of houses, there are a lot of houses for sale or rent from time to time. Go to the public forum at http://knottsisland.proboards53.com/ where there are message boards that you can use to ask about houses or sell one that you own here. Why don't you just call the site Knotts Island dot com? (Edited for clarity.) Well, it's like this. Some guy has purchased the domain name knottsisland.com for himself. It's his and we can't use it until he give it up. That's the simple answer. My guess is he wants to sell it when it becomes popular. That's been my experience. He bought it from a kid in Maryland. Back in the day when I first started this page, I called to see about buying it from the kid myself. He wanted 500 dollars for it. The guy who owns it now is probably hoping one of us will some day pony up that much or more money to have that web name. This is a practice known as "squatting." It's when one person holds a popular domain name even though they aren't affiliated with that name in any way. They do it in hopes that the people who really want the name will pay big money for it. It's legal but not necessarily ethical. In this editor's opinion, it's like extortion. It'd be like me buy the domain orphanshome.org and asking for 5000 or so dollars for the poor little kids to get the name back. The best thing to do would to ask the man himself why he's sitting on our name. His name is Ronald Brock of Heritage Plantation in Virginia Beach. Heritage Plantation, Inc.
He won't want to talk about it. He'll tell you it's his right to buy the name and sell it to whomever he wants to. There are people like him all over the web trying to make a fast buck. |
