June 5, 2010. Determining Date of Death by Melinda Lukei. There were no death certificates before 1914 by law, however some courthouses recorded birth and death records if the person came in and recorded them. We also have some church records that give birth, marriage and death dates. The early Church of England recorded some dates. So it is a hit or miss record until 1914 when the government made it a law. Most of the time we don't even have a will to give a time frame. Sometimes the will was not probated until the children were old enough to inherit (21 yrs) or the youngest child was 21. In that case, the date that the will is written would be more in line with the death date, or a marriage to a new husband or orphan records. Even this date is important because it gives a time frame of the persons death.
July 13, 2011. Family name by Melinda Lukei. Only a few people could read and write. So a name might be changed by the person writing the document and the rest of the family did not know it was spelled differently. People who could write spelled it the way they heard it.
