A 6-year-old girl was evacuated from Knotts Island on Saturday after being crushed by a garage door, officials said.
The girl, whose name was withheld, was injured shortly after 9:30
a.m., according to Rebecca Mims, Currituck County's emergency medical
services director.
According to witnesses, a broken garage door that had been propped-up fell about 5 feet onto the girl's torso and abdomen.
Knotts Island Fire and Rescue officials responded to the incident
and determined that the girl's injuries required medical treatment. A
Nightingale helicopter was dispatched and the Knotts Island Volunteer
Fire Department set up a landing zone.
The girl was transported to Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters in Virginia.
Terry King, assistant fire chief of the Knotts Island VFD, said the girl is expected to recover from her injuries.
